Biking The Balkans

Promotion of a regional network of local sustainable development experiences in South-Eastern Europe

Organized and promoted by UNESCO's Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, this meta-event is a series of scientific, cultural, sporting, and nature conservation related happenings. It intends to emphasize the idea of sustainable development as a result of interaction between the local initiatives and their global networking. Fifty participants from various European countries will cross the Western Balkans, from 24th June to 15th July 2006, biking within ten different sites of natural and cultural international importance. The aim is to discover unique environmental situations, discuss with stakeholders crucial issues related to the sustainability of local territorial dynamics and demonstrate concrete solidarity and openness to cultural diversity and local traditions and practices! Specific sites were chosen as promoted in particular by UNESCO in World Heritage sites and Man and Biosphere (MAB) Reserves, and connected to initiatives with our major partners in this project, including UNDP regional offices in supporting government's efforts in making critical steps toward sustainable development strategy. The participation in BthB is open to everybody.
