On the occasion of 8 March, International Women’s Day

The Office for Gender Equality of the Government of Montenegro and the United Nations System in Montenegro: IOM (The International Organization for Migration), UNDP (The United Nations Development Programme), UNHCR (The United Nations Refugee Agency), UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund) and WHO (World Health Organization) held a press conference on the occasion of 8 March, International Women's Day.

According to UN statistics, women perform 67% of work in the world; they earn 10% of world’s income; they own 1% of world’s property; they make 70% of illiterate in the world; feminization of poverty is especially visible among ethnic minorities, Roma and rural population; among the registered victims of human trafficking the majority are women; the number of refugee women who live in poverty is higher than the number of poor women in local population…

Some of common values that the United Nations and the European Union wish that the new and future candidates actuate are democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law. But, do these values practically involve gender equality and a high enough level of gender awareness?

Gender equality means that a man and a woman exercise their full human rights under equal conditions, and have the possibility to contribute to the national, political, economic, social and cultural progress, as well as to benefit equally from this progress. However, gender equality also involves understanding gender differences, which we do need to take into consideration.

Speakers at the conference were Ms. Dušica Živković, Head of IOM Office in Montenegro; Mr. Garret Tankosić Kelly, UNDP Montenegro Resident Representative a.i.; Ms. Robin Ellis, Head of UNHCR Office Montenegro; Ms. Branka Kovačević, Head of UNICEF Office Montenegro; Dr. Mira Jovanovski Dašić, Head of WHO Office Montenegro and Ms. Nada Drobnjak, Head of the Office for Gender Equality of the Government of Montenegro.
