Adventure tour to Northern Montenegro for national and international media
A trial run of the ‘Adventure Race: Mojkovac Extreme’ was the highlight of this adventurous and informative trip for representatives of national and international media. It included kayaking, rafting, hiking/orienteering, mountain biking and a jeep sightseeing ride. The race was planned as a demonstration to the local population that nature based tourism can be a great job creator and income generator for the area, and that nature-based tourism as a whole should be a way forward in terms of development. The journalists also heard a story of Mojkovac by the UNDP team and the local Tourism Organization, and the Black Mountain Company together with Kayak Montenegro presented their ‘Adventure Race Montenegro’.
Kayaking and rafting were organized on the river Tara, a World Heritage site which runs through one of the deepest, most secluded and beautiful canyons in the world; those who preferred hiking and biking enjoyed a breathtaking mountain view; some journalists decided to take a jeep ride and make stunning panoramic photos of Mojkovac town; at the end all the folks together with the Mayor of Mojkovac, camera crew and UNDP team had a lunch break at the unforgettably beautiful Ravnjak cascades.

Mojkovac is a tiny mountaineous municipality with glorious history. Nowadays, in times of transition, depression and poverty unfortunately prevail. Journalists were invited to witness and to record that the change is still already underway. This change is at the same time a major environmental challenge: for years, a lead and zinc tailing mine impoundment has represented a threat and a potential ecological disaster for the local population and for the biodiversity of the river Tara.
However, there is a good plan to get rid of the impoundment and to turn the location into a green recreational area. The plan is being implemented by the Government of Montenegro, with the support of the Government of Czech Republic and the Government of the Netherlands with the UNDP Montenegro. Remediation and recultivation of tailing mine impoundment is part of a $15 million worth Regional Environmental Programme which encompasses 6 countries/territories of the Western Balkans region.
