UNCT in Montenegro

The United Nations organizations in Montenegro are FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), IOM (International Organization for Migration), UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund), WHO (World Health Organization) including sister-agency and consultant, WB (the World Bank).

FAO works on project to improve the overall household incomes within the poorer and more isolated communities of Northern Montenegro by helping develop livestock production and marketing through provision of technical support, information and training.
 
IOM deals with the Combating Trafficking in Persons, Assisted Voluntary Return of Irregular Stranded Migrants, Czech Pilot Project: Active Selection of Qualified Foreign Workers, Temporary Residence Permits on humanitarian grounds Program (TRP) and regional Return and Reintegration for Trafficked Victims.

UNDP, in line with Montenegro's constitutional commitment to become Ecological State and its commitment to EU integration, is currently working on social inclusion, environmentally sensitive economic development and strengthening of public governance capacities.

UNHCR’s mandate is to provide Protection, Assistance and Durable Solutions to refugees and other persons of concern of UNHCR. In Montenegro, UNHCR leads and coordinates international efforts to protect refugees and displaced persons. UNHCR supports the Government of Montenegro in achieving international standards in the area of asylum, in its efforts to locally integrate refugees and displaced persons and in facilitating safe and sustainable returns. UNHCR also works on the avoidance and eradication of the statelessness phenomenon in Montenegro and in the region.

UNICEF supports Government of Montenegro in achieving UN and EU standards in social policy reform for children and in harmonization of child related national legislation with UN and EU standards. In cooperation with the state institutions and civil society organizations UNICEF also works in implementation of the activities related to comprehensive child protection system reform  in the area of Juvenile Justice system, in combating and preventing HIV/AIDS, in Early Child Development, in implementation of Child Centered Education with inclusion of Roma and other excluded children, inclusion and mainstreaming of children with disabilities, de-institutionalisation and addressing violence in families and schools.

WHO – The World Health Organization is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. In Montenegro it supports the Government through planned work in areas agreed by the Ministry of Health and WHO as being a priority. For 2008-9 these priority areas are Strengthening Health Systems, Communicable Diseases, Non- communicable diseases and Environmental Health. WHO’s activities focus on policy and strategy development within the government together with capacity development and technical assistance within the health system and institutions to improve delivery of services.

The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. It is not a bank in the common sense. It is made up of two unique development institutions owned by 185 member countries—the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA).
